Mushroom Cloud Galore: Classified Footage of America’s Atmospheric Nuclear Tests Finally Released
Physicists from the Livermore National Laboratory, USA, declassified dozens of videos that were made during nuclear weapons tests in the mid-twentieth century. A series of videos were uploaded to the official YouTube account.
Maya Krasavina learned more about them.
From 1945 to 1962, the United States of America conducted a total of 210 tests of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. All of them were recorded on tape. Ten thousand films were kept in secret storage for 50 years. And only now the US government gave the permission to publish these materials.
For five years, experts at the Livermore National Laboratory have been working on restoring and scanning films. Scientists believe that these terrifying shots will help to save humanity from a big mistake.
Greg Spriggs, LLNL nuclear weapon physicist: «All these films are united by the fact that all of them contain accurate scientific data. Data that can never be simulated again. These are devastating weapons, and I hope they're never used in war. But the stockpile has been an effective deterrent for more than 70 years. I hope that this project can help keep this effect.»
Tests of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere were treated as the least dangerous. Now it is clear that this is not the case.
Igor Nikulin, a former member of the UN Commission on Biological and Chemical Weapons: «This is probably the most dangerous form of testing although tests in the ocean aren't any better because it all depends on the wind direction and where this radioactive cloud will fly. It can fly anywhere and fly around the globe several times, so the consequence is an increase in the number of oncological diseases worldwide.»
As a result, the concentration of radioactive substances in the atmosphere reached its peak level in 1965. Although, in 1962, testing was ended. But the changes that have already occurred are practically irreversible.
Aleksey Leonkov, military expert: «Yes, such consequences really took place. By the way, the Bikini Atoll, one of the areas of nuclear weapons tests conducted by the Americans really turned into a dead zone, no one notified people about it they were not asked if they wanted to have such consequences. That's why this happened. Just like the Americans aren't going to apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki they won't apologize to the inhabitants of these islands and to pay compensation for the devastation and the consequences of their nuclear weapons tests».
23 nuclear explosions. Inhabitants of Atoll were evacuated in advance to one of the uninhabited islands with a supply of food. And after the tests, they were brought back to the ballistic range. After a few hours, they had symptoms of radiation sickness. And only a week later the Americans decided to provide medical assistance to the victims. In total, during the period of US nuclear tests, 840 Pacific Islanders died of cancer. Studies were also conducted on a voluntary basis. Of course, nobody warned the test subjects about the deadly danger.
Aleksey Leonkov: «There were tests involving US Army soldiers. They determined how the army could act on the battlefield after such a test of nuclear weapons. But, as far as we know, someone managed to get the compensation somehow with the help of public defender's office. Either way, money will never restore the health of people they lost as a result of the experiments. They were warned, they just were not told about the health consequences».
There are still no effective defense systems against nuclear attacks. Only autonomous underground bunkers. You can spend there a couple of years maximum. The half-life of carbon-14 is 5,370 years. And if the Third World War starts, there will be no winner.
